Additionally, the rising concerns on process contaminants, i.e. 3-monochloropropane diol (3-MCPDE) and glycidyl ester (GE), found in the refined edible oils have intensified the efforts to develop methods that can improve the quality of crude palm oil produced from the mills.
The free fatty acid content in SC-CO 2 extracted palm oil was found to be 0.61% as compared to 3.15% in commercial crude palm oil (CPO). The average peroxide value of the SC-CO 2 extracted CPO was 1.68 meq O 2 /kg, which indicated that SC-CO 2 extraction does not induce the formation of undesirable peroxides and hydroperoxides.

- Can process technologies improve the quality of palm oil produced?
- However, the process technologies and the quality of palm oil produced have remained stagnant for the past decades. This paper reviews the latest development in the process technologies that can be applied in the palm oil milling process to improve the sustainability and efficiency of palm oil production, as well as the quality of the oil produced.
- How to improve the sustainability of palm oil production?
- The global demand for palm oil will continue to rise, owing to the growing population and economy. Presently, tremendous efforts have been devoted to improving the sustainability of palm oil production. One strategy is to improve the oil extraction rate (OER) during the milling process.
- Can enzymatic treatment increase palm oil extraction rate?
- Consequently, concerted efforts have been undertaken to increase the palm oil extraction rate (OER) at processing mills. This paper explores the commercial application of enzymatic treatment of sterilised palm fruitlets and diluted crude oil (DCO) stream in a 60 t/hr oil palm mill.
- Where is palm oil produced?
- Currently, palm oil is primarily produced in Southeast Asia, with Indonesia and Malaysia account for approximately 84% of the world¡¯s production (USDA 2019). According to the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), the demand for palm oil is anticipated to hit 156 million tonnes by 2050 (Officer 2016).
- What type of oil is extracted from a palm tree?
- Two types of oil are extracted from the fruit of the palm tree: red crude palm oil from the mesocarp and palm yellow crude kernel oil from the endosperm, each of which has a distinct composition . Mesocarp oil is primarily used for edible purposes, whereas palm kernel oil has applications in the oleochemical industry .
- Can a sustainable palm oil milling process improve oil quality?
- This study will be beneficial for the development of a sustainable palm oil milling process with improved oil quality.
